Tree OF Life Art — 62 museum-grade prints on the theme. Aipan is the ritual floor- and wall-art of the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, made traditionally by Kumaoni women with white rice-paste (biswar) drawn by fingertip onto a geru — red-ochre earth — ground. The ashtadal kamal, the eight-petal lotus, is a classic Lakshmi-yantra form drawn at Diwali: the lotus is the seat of the goddess of fortune, and the lamps and conches set between its petals are the offerings of the rite. DESIGN BRIEF: the brief was the tree of life as the whole panel, so a single great tree rises from the foot and spreads its rounded boughs to fill most of the field, perched birds and a pair of peacocks at the crown, climbers threading the branches. We held the fill to medium and kept the fish-net frame open rather than a packed mesh, letting clear brick-red ground show through the gaps in the boughs so the tree breathes and the birds and climbers stay legible. Sohrai is a harvest-season wall art of Hazaribagh district, Jharkhand, painted by women of tribal and Kurmi communities to welcome cattle home after the rice harvest, around Diwali. The lotus pond, blooming with lotus, fish and ducks, is a recurring Sohrai blessing of water and abundance — the ponds that water the plateau fields and feed its life.
