DESIGN BRIEF: the brief was the sun-moon crown itself, the pair that opens so many Lanjia Saura walls, so we used the sun-moon-crown symmetry and gave the very top of the panel a rayed sun and a crescent moon with dancers and birds strung between them. Below that crown we laid out a full village ikon built border-inward — a tree of life on the centre axis, house-shrines, horses, an elephant, dance rows, drummers and corner huts — so the heavens preside over an ordinary day. We held the fill medium-light so the deep-maroon ground shows between bands and the eye rests on it, and refused faces, colour and perspective depth. Crowning a village with sun and moon is exactly how real Lanjia Saura inner walls speak in the Rayagada hills, where the two lights frame the world the ikon protects.
