The brief was to make Hadkai's specific protection legible: she is the goddess invoked against the rabid dog-bite, so she rides a dog herself and is guarded below by two seated watchdogs flanking a lamp, her palm raised in the gesture of warding. Keeping her on a warm ecru ground lets the alizarin red stay clear and the dogs read instantly as her domain rather than decoration. The Vaghri (Devipujak) community of north Gujarat, long kept from temple sanctums, painted the Mother onto cloth to carry their shrine with them, and the calm panel ring of musicians and lamp-bearing devotees keeps the centre clear. Alizarin red, iron-rust black, undyed cream: nothing else, because the limited natural-dye triad is the entire discipline.
