The brief was to make the vahana itself read first: the cockerel is drawn enormous, comb high and tail fanned, so the eye lands on Bahuchara's mount before it climbs to the crowned goddess seated upon it. A peaked temple-arch halo behind her does the work a sanctum would, with sun and flower roundels filling the spandrels. The Vaghri (Devipujak) community of Ahmedabad and Becharaji, long kept from temple sanctums, painted the Mother onto cloth to carry their shrine with them — Bahuchara, whose shrine at Becharaji is theirs, is the patron of the whole tradition. Madder-maroon red, iron-rust black, undyed cream: nothing else, because the limited natural-dye triad is the entire discipline.
