Meldi Mata rides a black goat with a broom in her hand — the Mother who sweeps away affliction, drawn plainly so the broom reads first. You hear it before you see it — the nagada thunder and the long trumpets, and behind them the Goddess rides out on her own street. The nine nights gather around her — under a canopy strung with bells, the Mother sits on her cockerel and the garba ring turns below.
