Narasimha Slaying Hiranyakashipu Kerala Mural Art Print — the lion-man avatar of Vishnu in panchavarna bhitti-chitra style · collector edition A2

The half-lion who keeps his word on a threshold at dusk — Narasimha bursting from the pillar, the demon king already across his lap.

The brief was to paint Kerala's most theatrical avatar without letting the violence overwhelm the panel — Narasimha is the moment a boon's loophole is closed, and it needs to read as righteous force, not gore. So the composition is held tight and central: the lion-man enthroned, golden mane radiating like its own halo, the pale demon Hiranyakashipu pulled across his raised thigh, while the boy-devotee Prahlada stands calmly at the right with folded hands — the still point that explains the whole scene. The body is painted in rajasic red against a deep temple-red ground, the guna code for energetic, fierce divinity, and the snarling lion face keeps the elongated lotus eyes of the tradition even at full ferocity. A flame-arch torana with green scroll-dragons crowns the head, framing the fury without crowding it.

  • Natural-oak or black frame on a warm-white or pale wall lets the deep red ground hold its drama
  • Hang in a puja corner or hallway at eye level so the lion face reads first
  • Pairs with vishnu-anantashayana or vishnu-garuda as a Vishnu-avatar trio
  • Sits well beside durga-mahishasuramardini or bhadrakali for a fierce-form wall
  • Avoid a strong red wall — it flattens the temple-red ground; choose neutral or pale instead
