The brief was the temple jhanki itself: the infant Krishna placed in his decorated cradle on Janmashtami night, the single tender image the whole festival turns on. We kept the baby small and central under a golden canopy, attended by just two women — one waving a peacock-feather fan — rather than a crowd, because a jhanki is meant to be a quiet tableau you stand before. Two white cows flank the platform, the cattle that belong to the cowherd child from the first night, and a lotus pond closes the sheet. The cream ground gives it a soft lamp-lit calm. This is the classical Nathdwara jhanki, the cloth set behind the cradle to frame the birth-night darshan.
