The brief was to fit an entire yatra into a single two-tone frame without it turning into a crowded postcard: a cluster of stone temples up top, deodar trees holding the sides, and a stepped path down the centre that the eye climbs the way a pilgrim climbs. We kept the fill near half so the geru slope still breathes between the figures and the trees, and read the pilgrims as a calm single file rather than a throng. Jageshwar Dham, in a deodar valley near Almora, is a Shiva cluster of well over a hundred stone temples, reached on foot through the forest — so the bells, the flag on the tallest spire, and the gateway arch at the base are the real furniture of that walk. Drawn the old way, white biswar on geru, the scene stays a devotional diagram rather than a landscape.
