Warli painting belongs to the Warli Adivasi community of the North Sahyadri range in Maharashtra — practiced in talukas including Dahanu, Talasari, Jawhar, Palghar, and Mokhada. Traditionally, women called Suvasinis painted interior hut walls with white pigment of rice paste, water, and gum applied using chewed bamboo sticks, over a ground of red geru soil and cow dung. Kohbar — also called puren in Kayastha households — is the Madhubani style tied to the nuptial chamber (kohbar ghar) where Maithil bride and groom traditionally spend their first nights after marriage. Before painting begins, women coat the central wall with mud and cow dung, then perform tip lagavaichi — placing a vermillion sindoor dot at the composition centre, often by an ahibati (married woman whose husband lives). Haldi — turmeric paste application — precedes lagnacha chauk marriage ritual in Warli wedding sequences across Mokhada and Palghar talukas. Forest-scatter symmetry shows intimate preparatory scenes distinct from chauk-central sacred square dominance.
