The brief was a single auspicious elephant, scaled large, in the moment that gives the pose its meaning: trunk raised to a gathering rain-cloud. Gond makes the elephant a joy of contrasting in-fills — a neat brick-row body, a great spiral ear that reads almost as a mandala, a scale-row saddle-blanket — three rhythms balanced on one calm animal. The raised trunk reaches toward a cobalt spiral cloud trailing rows of rain-dashes, so the whole composition has a small narrative without leaving the single-icon form. A tree, two birds and an anklet of beads root it in the forest and give it ceremony.
