Kite Day — Uttarayan kites over the rooftops · contemporary × Pithora fusion print · Rathwa-Bhil folk art of Chhota Udepur, Gujarat

On Uttarayan the whole sky is borrowed — so Pithora simply hands the upper field to the kites and lets the rooftops reach up after them.

The translation problem was the sky itself: Uttarayan is a festival that lives overhead, the air thick with kites, so the layout had to give the upper field entirely to flight. A scatter-village arrangement filled the top with flat-coloured diamond kites and their folk strings, a hot-air balloon drifting among them, while rooftop and terrace flyers reach up from below — the festival reading from the geometry of sky and rooftop. The kites became clean folk diamonds rather than photographed nylon, so the sky stays in the wall's vocabulary. Uttarayan, on Makar Sankranti, is one of Gujarat's great shared days, so it belongs beside the deity riders. The tractor, bus, carousel, cricket and the little pond of swans and fish below keep the festival grounded in the village having its biggest day out.

  • Natural-oak frame on cream or warm-white walls keeps the kite-filled sky and rooftops readable
  • Hang where the buoyant upper field can lift a tall stretch of wall
  • Pair with garba-night-circle or holi-colour-throw for a Pithora festival wall
  • Sits well in a child's room or family room where the kite festival brings cheer
  • Slim black frame echoes the black outlines in a room with dark wood
