Kerala Spice Vendor Art Print — Malabar pepper, cardamom and cinnamon merchant in flat panchavarna bhitti-chitra style, collector edition of 500

The Malabar pepper man given a sanctum's worth of dignity — green-bodied, sunray-haloed, sitting behind the baskets that once steered ships to this coast.

The brief was to take an ordinary spice stall and let it carry the weight Kerala's pepper, cardamom and cinnamon actually earned in world history, without descending into a costume joke. So the merchant gets the green sattvic body and a red sunray arc that devotional panels reserve for deities — a deliberate, respectful elevation of the trade — while the goods stay honest and namable: black pepper, green cardamom pods, bundled cinnamon quills, areca nut. We kept the density medium-light, one dominant seated figure with two flanking women in the central-icon grammar, the baskets standing in for a lotus pedestal so the fusion reads as mural first and market scene second. Brass weights and a brass measuring cup ground it in the real Kochi spice bazaar rather than nostalgia.

  • Natural-oak frame on a warm-white or terracotta kitchen wall keeps the brass and ochre glowing
  • Hang at eye level over a sideboard or coffee station where the spice baskets read at a glance
  • Pairs naturally with fisherwoman-market or coir-spinning-yard for a Kerala working-life trio
  • Black frame suits a café with dark wood; white frame keeps it bright in a modern kitchen
  • Group A3 versions with onam-sadya-banana-leaf for a food-and-trade dining wall
