Before any feast there is the quiet morning work — two women, one heavy stone, the day's flour turned out by hand.

The brief was to honour the unglamorous centre of the harvest: not the field, but the grinding, the daily turning of grain into flour that feeds the household. A central domestic scene put the two women and their stone hand-mill under a gabled roof at the heart of the wall, a hearth with pots and flames close by, so the eye reads the work and the kitchen in one breath. Among the agrarian Rathwa, women's labour around grain and hearth is the engine of the home, an honest subject the painted wall has always carried below the deities. A bullock-cart and winnowing women below extend the harvest cycle from field to flour. Medium-light fill keeps the round millstone, the hearth pots and each cow distinct rather than crowding the domestic scene.

  • Hang in a kitchen or dining wall where everyday labour belongs
  • Pair with harvest-plough-cattle or cattle-grazing-herd for a Pithora harvest-life wall
  • Sits well in a living-room corner that honours domestic life
