The brief was to catch the exact instant of a Bhagoria courtship without turning it into a crowd scene. The Bhagoria haat is the spring fair of the Bhil and Bhilala in western Madhya Pradesh, the days before Holi when young people come to the market to find each other — and a youth pressing gulal to a girl's cheek, returned, is the old way of agreeing to elope and marry. So we built the picture around that single gesture, the two figures large and central, and let the rest of the fair fall back: a flute player, a friend with a bowl of colour, a few women, and dancers small on the hills. The leaf-row in-fill keeps the clothes alive without crowding, and the midnight ground lets the magenta gulal carry the heat of the moment.
