The most painted face in Indian art, given a lotus to smell and a garden quiet enough to do it in.

The brief was reverence without crowding: Bani Thani is the single most idealized profile in Indian miniature, and the temptation is always to gild her to death. We chose the Kishangarh central-portrait because the school built its whole reputation on this one face — the impossibly arched eye, the fish-curved brow, the long sloping nose — and that ideal needs room and a soft ground, not a busy durbar. So she stands centre under a multi-lobed arch lifting a lotus to her face, with only a single cypress and a low garden wall behind, and a small attentive cast kept to the lower corners. The malachite-green ground and the pink lotus border do the talking; the line does the rest. What we left out — heavy gold leaf, a packed terrace, restless ornament — is exactly what keeps the profile readable as the hero.

  • Natural-oak or thin gold-leaf-liner frame on a warm-white or pale-pink wall lets the malachite ground and lotus border read true
  • Hang at eye level where the profile can hold a wall on its own — she does not need company to crowd her
  • Pairs with krishna-radha-kunj and baramasa-sharad-autumn from this collection for a Kishangarh trio
  • Keep clear of strong green walls — the malachite ground wants a neutral backdrop
  • Black frame sharpens the pearl strings and arched-eye line for a more graphic hang
