The brief was to picture the verb, not the noun: aipan as a thing done by hand, daughter to daughter, before a festival door is crossed. We held the figure to the exact fingertip line weight of the mandala she is drawing, so she belongs inside the diagram rather than sitting on top of it like a photo — the only depth allowed is the pair of lotus-capital pillars that frame her like a shrine doorway. Her hand reaches down to a half-finished threshold mandala, a central lotus ringed by four corner swastikas, the bowl of biswar paste still beside her knee, which is exactly how a Kumaoni woman lays it down: ground first, then the slow white line. We kept the fill medium-light and let the geru breathe so the unfinished lower mandala reads as in-progress, not packed. White biswar on geru, nothing else.
