The 426 Hemi engine, originally developed for NASCAR competition, produced 425 horsepower in road form and was rated at 375 HP from 1966 as an insurance industry response. The Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 was created in response to the SCCA Trans-Am racing series maximum 305 cubic-inch engine displacement rule. The production car debuted in 1967 with the 302 CU IN combination and won the Trans-Am championship in 1968 and 1969, driven by Mark Donohue and Penske Racing.
