Intermeccanica was founded by Frank Reisner in Turin in 1959, later establishing Canadian operations in Vancouver. The Italia continued the firm's tradition of Italian-designed coachwork on American mechanicals, following Apollo GT and Griffith programmes. The Ligier JS2 (1971–1975) used a steel backbone chassis and fibreglass body with a Maserati-derived V6, predating Ligier's Formula 1 constructor era. Approximately 265 examples were built.
