Emerson Fittipaldi won Formula One world championships in 1972 (Lotus) and 1974 (McLaren), becoming Brazil's first World Champion and the sport's then-youngest title winner. His 1974 McLaren campaign ended Jackie Stewart's Tyrrell era and preceded the Hunt–Lauda rivalry that defined 1976. James Hunt won the 1976 Formula One World Championship with McLaren by one point over Niki Lauda after a season defined by the Nürburgring fire, protested Spanish Grand Prix, and rain-shortened Japanese finale. He started with Hesketh Racing before joining McLaren in 1976; his playboy image and BBC commentary career made him Britain's most recognisable F1 personality of the 1970s.
