The Gor — the priest-painter drawing the horses on the wall · contemporary × Pithora fusion print · Rathwa-Bhil folk art of Chhota Udepur, Gujarat

Here is the wall painting itself — the Gor caught mid-stroke, two horses still only outlines in red, the pigment pots still open at his feet.

The brief was the most self-aware idea in the collection: paint the painter. The Gor — the Lakhara priest-painter — stands at the centre drawing horse outlines in plain vermilion line, and those horses are deliberately left unfinished, only their contour laid down, so the viewer catches a Pithora in the very act of being made. A central layout put the painter and his half-drawn horses dead-centre, with an assistant kneeling beside him grinding and mixing pigment in open bowls, the colours of the whole wall sitting ready at his feet. Only the Gor may execute the sacred wall, working to the badva's chants, so giving him this central, active role is true to the tradition's hierarchy. The tractor and bus in the lower band keep the scene in the living present rather than freezing it as a museum tableau.

  • Natural-oak frame on cream or warm-white walls keeps the painter and his unfinished red horses readable
  • Hang in a studio or on an artist's wall where the making of art is the subject
  • Pair with lakhara-painter-ritual or bhopa-narration for a Pithora ritual-people triptych
  • Sits well in a study or library where a thoughtful, meta piece belongs
  • Slim black frame echoes the black outlines in a room with dark wood
