The brief was the monsoon's own festival — Teej, when women tie swings to the trees, dress in green and sing the rains in — and it sits naturally in Kangra's lyrical garden-bower grammar, all soft hills, leafy trees and tender grouped figures. There was little to translate, since a flower-decked swing under a monsoon tree is itself a classic Pahari motif; we simply kept it to the everyday festive warmth of friends celebrating together. The swing-rider in green is the clear centre, her companions drawn into a close ring — one pushing the rope, one with folded hands, two drumming in front — while the malachite garden and the grey monsoon sky carry the season. The lush green is the dominant note; the red and orange saris keep it warm.
