The Porsche 356 Speedster was introduced in 1954 at the suggestion of American importer Max Hoffman, who believed a lower-cost, lower-windscreen roadster would find customers among California sports-car enthusiasts. Built on the 356 A platform, it weighed little over 800 kg, was powered by an air-cooled flat-four of between 55 and 70 PS depending on carburetion, and became the template for the brand's enduring identity — rear-engine, lightweight, purposeful.
