Lunar Orbiter 1 Poster — 1966 First Earthrise NASA Heritage Collector Print

Earth rising over a grey limb while a film camera developed frames onboard — Lunar Orbiter 1 earns Langley dignity because the 23 August 1966 photograph arrived before Apollo crews would make Earthrise anthemic.

Rank 77 documents Lunar Orbiter 1 — the 385.6 kg Langley Research Center spacecraft that on 23 August 1966 captured the first photograph of Earth from lunar orbit, while surveying nine candidate Apollo landing sites across 189 × 1,866 km orbits. Launched 10 August 1966 on Atlas-Agena D, Lunar Orbiter 1 carried a film system that developed images onboard and scanned them to Earth at resolution approaching one metre on close approach — mapping 99% of the Moon across five missions in the program Clifford Nelson and Isadore M. Levine directed. The Earthrise composition predated Apollo 8's famous view by more than two years and gave mission planners the photographic inventory Armstrong's landing would need. Wallimilist renders the spacecraft LARGE with camera barrel forward and Earth rising over the limb exactly as the master PNG dictates — First Earthrise from Moon photograph kicker, 1966 display, and LAUNCH 10 AUG 1966 footer.

  • Black frame on warm white walls — Earthrise limb and monochrome spacecraft stay true without overpowering neutral upholstery
  • Pair with Apollo 8 or Ranger 7 NASA Heritage prints at matching A2 for lunar photography lineage
  • Hang above a credenza at eye level; the camera barrel and Earth disc read best with half a metre stand-off
  • Natural-oak frame suits study walls where cream panel echoes wood tones beside lunar atlases
  • Stack A3 beside Surveyor 1 or Apollo 11 for survey-to-landing lunar narrative
  • Avoid competing saturated blue decor directly beside the Earth disc if you want Earthrise tones to stay accurate
