Powered by the Nakajima Ha-45 Homare eighteen-cylinder radial and armed with two 20 mm Ho-5 cannon plus two 12.7 mm machine guns, the Hayate entered service in 1944 as homeland-defence units scrambled against B-29 formations and carrier raids. Production suffered from alloy shortages and inconsistent engine quality, yet pilots who received well-built examples reported performance that embarrassed earlier Army fighter doctrine.
