The brief was the wildest solo in the Rajasthani night — the Kalbeliya, where the dancer mimics a serpent's swerve in a black mirror-dotted skirt — composed the way a Marwar painter would centre a single performer. It works because the grammar fits: one arched figure carrying the page, a small ring of musicians spaced around her, the open desert behind. We kept the cast to the dancer and three players — a been blown at left, a dholak and khartal at right — and let the amber dunes, the fire and the crescent moon hold the rest. The black ghagra is the dramatic note against the golden ground and lapis sky; everything that would crowd the spin has been left to the dunes and the lone pavilion.
