Carroll Shelby approached AC Cars in 1961 with a proposal: take the AC Ace chassis and install a Ford V8. The resulting Cobra debuted with a 260 cubic-inch Ford V8 in 1962 and evolved through the 289 small-block to the definitive 427 FE big-block in the MkIII (1965–1967) — a 345 horsepower engine in an aluminium roadster body weighing 1,000 kilograms, which produced a power-to-weight ratio that the contemporary Ferrari 275 GTB could not match at any price.
