Joop Donkervoort began building Lotus Seven-derived roadsters in the Netherlands in 1978, purchasing genuine Caterham chassis rights and specifying Ford and later Audi Quattro turbocharged engines in a hand-formed aluminium body over a tubular space frame. The D8 designation encompasses the core lineage — open cockpit, cycle fenders, exposed exhaust pipes, roll hoops, and a power-to-weight ratio that invited Nürburgring comparisons with far more expensive machinery.
