Rank 32 closes the Apollo lunar landing era with Apollo 17 — the sixth and final crewed Moon landing of December 1972, targeting the Taurus-Littrow valley for its young volcanic geology and massif surroundings. Commander Gene Cernan, lunar module pilot Harrison Schmitt — the only professional scientist to walk the Moon — and command module pilot Ron Evans rode Saturn V SA-512 on a night launch that ended a program which had defined human spaceflight ambition for a decade. Across 22 hours of surface EVA the crew drove the Lunar Roving Vehicle 35.9 kilometres, collected 110.52 kg of samples including famous orange glass beads from short-lived volcanism, and left Cernan's final bootprint as the last human step on another world.
