Working on mill-made paper with a bold single black brush outline and soft 'boneless' shaded strokes on a plain ground, they painted gods and goddesses alongside what is often called India's first modern social satire — sharp, affectionate caricatures of the colonial 'babu' and the hypocrisies of Calcutta life. Haussmann's renovation of Paris between 1853 and 1870 standardized the six-storey apartment block with aligned cornices, mansard roofs, and continuous balcony lines — a visual grammar that still defines the city's boulevards from the Marais to Montmartre's lower slopes.
